How I almost missed my flight @DubaiAirports

Dubai is fast becoming (if it has not already become) a global hub for flights and caters to several destinations around the world.

The flight to Karachi was booked courtesy of Emirates Airlines, providing the rare opportunity to enjoy the Gulf’s largest airport for the longest time possible, especially on the return leg of the eventful trip which had a transit time of 6 or so hours.

The schedules - not all flights are announced over the speakers tho!

Firstly, I specifically had my MasterCard made for this very trip. The reasons are as follows:

1) Prevents the necessity to carry lots of cash to pay for the hotel room.

2) Complimentary access to lounges in several airports, most importantly: Dubai

All you need to do is pay back any amounts you pay with it, and all you get stuck with is a 40KD annual subscription fee. In return for enjoying the lounges? Yes Please!

So there I was chilling at the lounge, my flight was at 8:50pm.

kick off your shoes and relax!

Whilst walking towards the Marhaba lounge I noticed that Gate A, where I was meant to catch my flight from, was indicated in close proximity to the lounge. Therefore, I did not feel the need to rush things, and decided I could easily make the walk within 25 minutes of departure, whereby the gate would be closed.

At about 8:10pm I started to feel giddy, and decided to go for prayer.

We have a saying in Arabic, انما الاعمال بالنيات meaning you are rewarded based upon your intent.

I walked towards where I thought Gate A was meant to be, only to find:

I was expecting Gate A, and I found a train stop…

A train stop! Tick tock goes the clock, 8:25 and counting!

I was not even aware that there was such a system in Dubai! I have not been to any of the mega airports around the world, but I am guessing the feeling of panic and anxiety is almost the same.

No Exit… *shudder*

After the train ride, I was greeted by this wondrous sight – an escalator reminiscent of the Simpsons episode where Bart had a near death experience after being hit by Mr. Burn’s car:

stairway to heaven

The escalator to heaven.. I mean Gate A (so high up you get a nosebleed)

Suffice to say, despite making it to the gate in the nick of time, take off was delayed. However the flight still managed to land earlier than expected.

How that happens, I will never know.
