Lauding the @OfficialKFSD

In this world, it is easy to lose objective of what we have to be thankful for, for example a quick response to an emergency situation by the emergency services, as what I just witnessed this morning.

My wife and I were leaving our building to head for work and we noticed a smoking car in the middle of the road. Passers by stared awkwardly and hurried away, whilst drivers took insane turns to avoid the fuming vehicle.

Shortly after, people started congregating around the soon to be inferno, some attempting to put it out with water and fire extinguishers.

The bonnet began darkening and soon flames began erupting from beneath it, engulfing the entire engine. people frantically attempted in vain to put it out.

I called the emergency number, and in 7- 10 minutes 3 KFSD vehicles were there, with two traffic police, shortly after an emergency police vehicle also came to pop open the bonnet and put out the flames.

All in all, 16 persons plus two emergency police.

Good response.

The Arizona Almost Arrest

One of the scariest views in the world, specifically when driving in the USA, is to pass a cop on a highway who you see pull a complete 180 turn, flash the sirens, and shoot down behind you.
It happened on our way to the Grand Canyon from Colorado. I was stuck behind a large trailer and wanted to overtake on a two Lane road, so I poke out from behind and gun it.

Unfortunately for me, the person coming towards me was very close, and also, a cop. The minute i passed him i knew something was wrong, I’d committed a grave mistake, possibly referred to as aggressive driving.

As if on queue, i look into my rear view and the police jeep pull a 180, turn its sirens on, and get stuck behind the same RV i was.

I slowed down, and sure enough, he was behind me. So i pulled over onto the side, put both hands on the steering wheel, slapped on my most none threatening smile, and waited.

A minute or so later, the officer approaches the vehicle. I roll down my window. He starts with a greeting, then asked if anyone in the car was in need of medical assistance. He also asked if i knew what I’d done wrong, that it’s dangerous.

I handed over my international licence and the vehicle’s registration, he looks through it then asks if im either drunk or tired. I answered no.

My papers are handed to me and I’m asked to get to my destination safely.

A million thoughts ran through my head, a fine, jail time (both of which i cant afford), this was a breath of Fresh Air if ever there was one.

In addition, earlier in South Dakota, we’d parked our car infront of our hotel and woke up to find a ticket on the windshield as we’d apparently parked facing the wrong direction. The hotel owner called the local police, who showed up at our doorstep, she explained we’re from out of town, and the policeman agreed to waive the ticket.

Happy camper, right here 👈

Expect the full road trip write up soon.

Kuwait’s New Traffic Laws – What you need to Know

The roads of Kuwait are in disarray, the General Traffic Department (GTD) is currently in its “Traffic week” with nice antics such as passing flowers to motorists (link).

As sweet as that may sound, there is also the issue of the following announcement, on an advertising account on Instagram, no doubt purported after a wave of posts pertaining the subject were made:

Kuwait, Ministry of Interior, MOI, General Traffic Department, GTD

MOI: Impounding any vehicles bearing writings or unofficial stickers or advertising or pictures or slogans, and the violating motorist.

As there was no official channel used to inform motorists of this new rule, one would be smart in dismissing it as hearsay.

One would be wrong, as I am living proof that this new traffic law is in in fact in effect, and motorists left right and center are getting their vehicles impounded because of it.

Just so you are aware, any sticker, of any kind, be it a picture of Baba Jaber, an Islamic verse etc. is a violation. It is up to the officer who see’s you whether or not they ticket you for it.

FACT: they even consider the Prado and Pajero names on the doors to be stickers, and have impounded vehicles for them. Trust me, I saw it first hand.

Here are a few anecdotal responses found on instragram as a result of this new traffic law:

4th Ring Accident this Morning

image

this image made me do a double take on the 4th on my way to work today. it happened at the overpass by route 55 (Airport Road), and was witnessed at roughly 740AM.

at first glance it would seem a careless mistake or reckless driving. however, upon arriving at work I found that I had merely witnessed part II of the incident,  as my friend filled me in on part 1.

We usually don’t pay attention to every detail on the road like for example, the condition of the barricades on the side; unless you’re me. I noticed that the barricades were banged up pretty hard today.

as it turned out, the driver of the vehicle (with family in tow) had a seizure whilst driving down the road earlier this morning (around 620AM) and was careening haphazardly down the road,  smashing into barricades and other vehicles.

my friend called emergency services at 633am to inform them of the danger on the 4th.

we hope everyone in that vehicle is safe.

by the time I arrived there were cop cars, a fire truck and a fire SUV.

Running into Kuwait’s Fashion Police

The National & Liberation day celebrations have come and gone, and as we all dry ourselves off it is pertinent to recall where and how we celebrated these pivotal days in the history of Kuwait. Most will say they spent it gallivanting up and down the Gulf Road spraying water on anything or anyone that moved.

This however is how me and 2 friends celebrated the day of the 25th, by running 25KM on the Gulf Road, at risk of bewetting:

Running 25KM on February 25th

Every special day deserves a special outfit, and I saw it fit to break out the running costume I’d planned to debut at RunQ8;

image

The fully functional 'Flash' costume!

Yes ladies and gentlemen; a fully functioning flash costume that serves a proper aid to running – being compression wear.

Now, we were not spared the water fray. On the contrary,  we represented moving targets. However even the police took their turn poking fun at us; it all happened at the intersection of 3rd Ring Road with the Gulf Road, my friend and I were waiting for our other friend to catch up when suddenly we were approached by cops (me specifically) who asked a) what are we doing & b) what was I wearing.

At this point I would like to draw your attention to the fact that I was not the most ridiculously dressed person on the Gulf Road at that time.

The officer paraded me before his friends where I had to try to explain the concept of compression running gear. In the end I understood the cop mistook me for impersonating this character made popular on Melody Hits TV:

image

I can see the striking resemblance …. it is uncanny. He then asked about the lightning bolt on my chest, and I tried explaining the concept of the Flash, only to end up saying:

I’m Harry Potter.
